Showcasing iSkills

Last week Lorna Hector (Assistant Librarian at GC LRC) and I showcased the LRCs NEW iSkills online learning modules to, about 60, Further Education Librarians at a UKSG FE event.

For those of you who haven’t looked at it yet,  iSkills stands for information skills. iSkills modules are online, interactive, modules lasting 5 – 15 minutes.  They are on a range of topics that explain how to study effectively and show how to find and use information.

The full range of modules is shown here.

They were put together by the LRC team in collaboration with Hugh Vaughn from Web Services using Articulate. Since the start of term the modules have been accessed over 14,000 times.

If you haven’t already, check it out and have a go! You can access iSkills via the LRCs Moodle pages, the 'My College' tab or through the LRCs Moodle block on the right hand side of your course page.

We had a great day at the event and learnt lots about how other LRCs are supporting students, networked but didn’t eat much food as we were on after lunch and a bit nervous.

If you would like to view our presentation and the others from the event you can access them here: http://www.uksg.org/event/FE301116

Don’t forget you can access iSkills and all the LRCs Online resources 24/7 from home all through the holidays. Please pop into your LRC if you have any questions about iSkills, e-books or how to access online journals.

Looking for festive images?

Christmas is coming and our subscription to Britannica ImageQuest can help with the decorations with the festive selection of DK Images

DK Images sources its collection from books published by the world-renowned publisher Dorling Kindersley. The collection has over 2 million images, and while not all of them are festive, their library of educational images is unparallelled.

You can check out this amazing collection, plus all the other wonderful collections, in Britannica ImageQuest!

A Level Magazine Archive upgrade

Between the 9 and 21 of December there will be no access to the online A Level Magazines Archive.

This is because Hodder Education will be making major changes to how their websites and digital products are hosted and migrating them to a new secure server, to ensure their sites meet the latest security recommendations and continue to run smoothly. This is essential work and Hodder Education hope they have chosen a time which will have the least impact.

Being so close to the end of term we hope it won’t cause you too much disruption and that this early alert will allow you to plan ahead.

Introducing your LRC

Welcome to the Learning Resource Centres. After a lovely hot sunny summer we hope you are now ready to do some work.

The LRCs are here for everybody.

Whether you need a course text book, somewhere to work quietly, need to do research on the internet, want a DVD to watch this weekend, or need to print something out, your LRC is the place to come.

You’ll need to know where to find us.

If you are at Guildford, we are on the top floor of the Jubilee building. At Merrist Wood you can find us in the Harris Centre, and at Farnham we are in Surrey Court on the first floor. It doesn’t matter which campus your course is based at, you can use any or all of our centres.

How we can help

The most successful students are those who use the LRC regularly. Remember that we have staff here whose job it is to help you find the information you need, so do come and ask. We can not only find you information on most subjects, but our sources are guaranteed to be of good quality and up to date. Which means you will get top marks in your assignments.
Remember you will need your ID card with you at all times when using the LRC. You will need it to:
·         borrow a book
·         log on to a computer
·         top up your printer credit
·         have your password reset

Our resources are available 24/7 though Moodle. You can access online databases and e-books as well as our library catalogue.

Over the summer our staff have created a new programme of iSkills. Short interactive session to help you find your way around our resources and develop your study skills. These can be found through the LRC Moodle pages.

Whether you want information on hobbies or holidays, films or fashion, rest or relaxation we can find it for you.

Welcome to the LRCs

Hello and welcome to all new and returning students from the LRCs.  Hopefully we will see most of you over the next few weeks as you settle in and the first assignments are set.

If you're new to college you should be coming along to an introduction to the LRC - but if you miss it don't worry just call into your LRC and talk to a member of staff at the desk.  We're here to help and will happily make sure you can find your way round so you can access the resources you need.

Also watch out for LRC displays and activities throughout the year, including some competitions where there are prizes to be won.
