E-resources Week 13th - 17th January

E-books, have you used them yet?

All three LRCs are closing over Christmas but e-books are a great way to use the LRC's resources from home!

Here is a quick guide to get you started...

We have over 3200 e-books in stock and they are all accessible through our Online Catalogue 'Heritage'. Please open the Heritage link in Google Chrome or Internet Explorer 9 to make sure you have full functionality.

If you just want to search for e-books use Advanced search and select E-book from the Media Type drop down menu.

Once you have your search results click on the title of the e-book you want to view and then on the Resource link. Enter your College Username and Password and you will be transferred to the e-book. 

All e-books can be viewed online or downloaded to your computer. You can also print and copy from e-books and use a range of interactive tools to help you study.

PINs Week at GC LRC

Last week was PINs week at Guildford College LRC and you may have noticed staff wearing the badges in the picture to the right.

We were using to week to promote that students and staff can use our Online Catalogue Heritage to renew, reserve and even review books. This can help you to manage your loans and avoid having to pay fines for overdue books.

Just pop along to the Heritage website and enter your student number and PIN in the log in box:

If you haven’t got a Heritage PIN just ask a member of LRC staff and they can set you one up.

Have you found a book really useful or enjoyable? Why not check out our previous blog post 'Reviewing resources on Heritage' and write a review. If you are a tutor, you can use this facility to recommend useful books to your students.

LRC CPD Day Showcase

The LRC had a very successful CDP Day showcase with 61 staff visiting us. There was a wide range of activities on offer including:

·         CIS Guildford QR Code game

·         Dewey order game and word games

·         Demonstration of Keynote reports

·         Have a go at using Action & Flip Cameras

·         Try out an e-book reader or the interactive books on the iPad

·         Find out about the LRC pages on Moodle and use Heritage Online

·         Tweet and find out about the new LRC Blog

Reviewing resources on Heritage

A relatively new feature on our online catalogue, Heritage, is the ability to rate and review resources that you have enjoyed or think may benefit other library users. This could be a good film that you have seen, a great fiction book or a really useful textbook for students to use on their course. It is really simple to use and is very similar to the feature on Amazon where customers rate and review certain items, here is how you do it:

·         First you need to head to our online catalogue at www.guildford.ac.uk/heritage

·         You then need to log in on the right hand side using your reader code and pin number. Your reader code is your student number or, for staff, your network log in e.g. asmith, a library pin can be requested from the LRC if you don’t have one.

·         Now that you are logged in you can search for a resource that you want to review. Once you have found the item you want to review just click on the ‘create a review’ button.

·         You can now rate your resource out of 5 stars and write a small description about what you thought of the resource.

·         Once you have submitted a review other library users can see what you have written about the item as it will appear on the catalogue record

This is a really useful tool and allows users to see which books are really good and will also warn people of any books or films that are worth a miss! It is also a really good tool for tutors to recommend texts to students and pin point any useful chapters.

E-Resources: what are they and where do I find them?

Did you know that the LRCs provide you with access to hundreds of books and journals online?

Available to all staff and students the resources include general sources such as Britannica, subject databases which provide access to journal articles such as intered or SportDiscus, as well as ebooks which cover all subjects at all levels.

Most allow direct access if you are at college but some will require you to have a special password - more on this later...

Where can I find these resources?

To find this wealth of information log onto Moodle and look under

Online Databases and Journals

Scroll down the page to find the appropriate subject heading to get links to the most relevant databases and journals.

Looking for a particular journal title?  You could try searching the A-Z of Online Journals which allows you to see if it is included in any of the databases available across all subjects.

Ebooks

Information about, and links to, all the ebooks are included in the library catalogue called Heritage. Look for the link on this blog and on the E-Resources page on Moodle.

The best way to find ebooks on the catalogue is to choose Advanced Search and then use the drop-down menu under Media type to select E-book.  Then type in your search term and click Search.

Can I use the databases and ebooks at home?

You can access most of our e-resources from home as long as you have signed up for an Athens username and password at college.  Simply follow the instructions on the helpsheet available from any LRC.

When you click on a link to a database or ebook you will be asked to enter your Athens details before the resource can be used.
