e-resources week 2014

e-resources week saw a total of 56 students drop-in to the LRCs to find out more about  accessing e-books and e-resources including mySearch.

We also had 18 students complete our quiz with 3 students winning £10 printing vouchers. These students were Sally Thompson (GC), Sacha Rivett (MW) and Harriet Bragg (FC).

mySearch allows you to search most of the LRCs e-resources in one place!

Dawsonera is one of our e-book platforms and allows you to access and download e-books to your PC and portable devices such as iPads.

If you would like to find out more about these e-resources and the others that are available to staff and students please pop into your LRC and ask!

No more Athens!

... or how to access e-resources in future.

The LRCs pay for a wide-ranging selection of quality e-resources to support teaching and learning.  The providers of these resources restrict access to those who have paid and therefore they need to know who is trying to access the resource so only subscribers get in.

On college computers this is sometimes done by the IP address of the PC you are using.  This means you will get automatic access to the resource without having to log in.

Another way to control access is via a password.  Some resources have their own unique username and password and where this is the case the details will be on Moodle.

For other resources we used the Athens authentication system to provide access.  However, from September 2012 we will no longer be using this system.

How will this affect me?

The big plus is it means you won't have to remember another password.  Instead you will use your college username and password - the same one you use to log on to college computers.

Some resources provide a link which will take you straight to the college login box which makes access straight forward.  Others do not have this facility and what it means is that instead of looking for a login box that says 'Athens' you will look for a box that says one of the following:

    UK Federation

            UK Access Management Federation

            Institutional login

          Athens/Institution login

          Shibboleth login

If you see none of these you may need to click on a small line marked 'Alternative login'

The institution name has also changed and you should login using Guildford College Open Athens Service

Once you have logged in you will be able to access other e-resources which use this type of login automatically as long as you remain on the internet.

If you run into any problems, or have any questions, please ask in the LRC.

          Using E-resources at Farnham College

Students at Farnham College are able to access a huge range of specially purchased on-line material, thanks to the fact that they share resources with Merrist Wood and Guildford College.  The ones they find most useful include:
          ·         Infotrac – journals, magazines, newspapers, reference covering many subjects
          ·         Issues Online – a wide coverage of contemporary social issues
          ·         New Scientist
          ·         e-Mag – English Literature and Language
          ·         Media Magazine
          ·         New Perspective – History articles
          ·         Intered – specialist magazines and books covering child care ages 0-18 years
          ·         Ebooks such as the Level 3 BTEC Business book
Go to Moodle/Key Courses/E-resources and explore these yourself, or ask a member of the LRC staff to help you find the ones most relevant to your subject.

E-Resources: what are they and where do I find them?

Did you know that the LRCs provide you with access to hundreds of books and journals online?

Available to all staff and students the resources include general sources such as Britannica, subject databases which provide access to journal articles such as intered or SportDiscus, as well as ebooks which cover all subjects at all levels.

Most allow direct access if you are at college but some will require you to have a special password - more on this later...

Where can I find these resources?

To find this wealth of information log onto Moodle and look under

Key Courses - Learning Resource Centre - E-Resources

          Online Databases and Journals

Scroll down the page to find the appropriate subject heading to get links to the most relevant databases and journals.

Looking for a particular journal title?  You could try searching the A-Z of Online Journals which allows you to see if it is included in any of the databases available across all subjects.

          Ebooks

Information about, and links to, all the ebooks are included in the library catalogue called Heritage. Look for the link on this blog and on the E-Resources page on Moodle.

The best way to find ebooks on the catalogue is to choose Advanced Search and then use the drop-down menu under Media type to select E-book.  Then type in your search term and click Search.

Can I use the databases and ebooks at home?

You can access most of our e-resources from home as long as you have signed up for an Athens username and password at college.  Simply follow the instructions on the helpsheet available from any LRC.

When you click on a link to a database or ebook you will be asked to enter your Athens details before the resource can be used.

          Need more help?

If you have any questions about any of the resources or you would like some tips on how to search them don't forget that the LRC staff are on hand to help.
